The topography of the land in eastern Montana is diverse, ranging from gently rolling hills covered with sagebrush or prairie grass, to hills of pine and larch, or bands of alder, birch and cottonwood along the river banks. This is wide open country offering plenty of seclusion. Yet even while the nearest stores may be a few miles distant, you can generally always find what you need in this part of Big Sky Country. Much of the land lies between the rivers followed by Lewis and Clark, the Missouri and the Yellowstone. There is ranch land where "a river runs thorough it" is indeed true. Ranch land in the western third of eastern Montana and in southeastern Montana often features dramatic views of mountain ranges. Many ranch sites feature fish and abundant wildlife and many possibilities for excursions on horseback. You're guaranteed to find friendly and helpful folks in nearby small towns, and also the larger towns for that matter. Just east of the Divide, in you'll find ranch land close to small and medium sized towns. Much of this land lies in valleys between Montana's many mountain ranges Farther east, as you approach the Dakotas the country is much more open with towns fewer and farther in between, where you can seemingly "ride forever". If you're looking to settle in Montana and do a bit of ranching you'll find that most folks think their state government, like most Montanans, is friendly, helpful and generally non-intrusive.
