Helena, Montana 59601. Helena is the county seat of Lewis and Clark County and  the capitol of the state of Montana. Helena is located just east of the Continental Divide in “Last Chance Gulch” where placer gold was discovered in 1864  and brought the first white settlers to the area. The estimated population, in 2003, was 26,718. At the time of the 2000 census, the per capita income in Helena was $20,020, compared with $21,587 nationally. In the county there are about 25,672 housing units at an average density of 7/mi². The racial makeup of the county is 95% White, 0.2% Black, 2.% Native American, 0.52% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 0.4% from other races, and 2% from two or more races. 2% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 22,850 households out of which 32% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 52% are married couples living together, 9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 34% are non-families. 29% of all households are made up of individuals and 9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2 and the average family size is 3.

In the county the population is spread out with 26% under the age of 18, 8% from 18 to 24, 28% from 25 to 44, 26% from 45 to 64, and 12% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 96 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 94 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $37,360, and the median income for a family is $46,766. Males have a median income of $33,515 versus $23,961 for females. The per capita income for the county is $18,763. 11% of the population and 7% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 13% of those under the age of 18 and 6% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
